Earlier today, during their September media event, Apple announced the new iPhone 5, the iPod touch 5G (fifth-generation), the seventh-generation iPod nano and a radical redesign to their headphones, which are now officially dubbed EarPods.While our earlier live feed of the event contains all major details on everything discussed, let’s dive further in-depth on all the major details pertaining to the iPhone 5. iPhone 5 highlights and key points for discussion:
The new iPhone features a gorgeous, vertically enhanced display that measures 4.87 inches in height and 2.31 inches in width. It offers a stunning Retina-level resolution of 1,136-by-640 and boasts an outstanding 326 pixels per inch (ppi or pixel density).
Thanks to an all-new, unibody aluminum and glass design, the iPhone 5 measures in at just 7.6 mm thick and weighs only 112 grams – that’s 1.7 mm thinner and 28 grams lighter than the iPhone 4S. Even with it’s larger profile, the newiPhone still manages to offer a thinner and lighter build over it’s now-outdated predecessor.
4G LTE technology allows the iPhone to reach blistering cellular speeds of up to 100Mbps, which is faster than most home internet connections in the United States. Also, new dual-band connectivity boosts speeds over Wi-Fi, up to 150Mbps.
The A6 processor accelerates speeds and improves the iPhone 5′s battery life. Speculated to be a quad-core processor, Apple suggests that performance and graphics are up to twice as fast on the new A6 chip. Also, because the new processor consumes less power, the iPhone 5 offers up to 8 hours of web browsing or talk time on either 3G or LTE and 10 hours of video playback.
A new sapphire crystal iSight camera lens means less scratches and clearer pictures. The camera itself remains 8 megapixels with advanced optics, like the iPhone 5′s predecessor. However, the iPhone 5 is capable of capturing panorama images – unlike previous iPhone generations.
A significantly smaller dock connector enables Thunderbolt-like speeds and provides room for the newly repositioned headphone jack, which is now situated on the bottom of the device.
New nano-SIM technology allows for a 44 percent smaller SIM card in the iPhone 5 than in both the iPhone 4 andiPhone 4S. Other changes include improvements to the speaker and microphone grills, as well as a repositioned FaceTime camera and sensors.
The iPhone 5 will be available in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB capacities for $199, $299 or $399 under a two-year contract. Pre-orders begin September 14th and units will ship on the 21st.
