iOS 6 Adoption At Just Over One Week: 60% For iPhone And 41% For iPad

Adoption of Apple’s iOS 6 continues to trend upwards, with touch-friendly website conversion providerOnswipe seeing more users flocking to the newly-released platform, despite its apparent shortcomings. Based on a sample of 100,000 users coming through Onswipe’s partner sites Friday morning, the company is seeing 59.43% of iPhone traffic from iOS 6 devices, and 41.3% of iPad traffic coming from those who’ve upgraded to the latest version.

That means that after just over a week, the majority of those who have an iPhone have already upgraded. Compare that to numbers for iOS 5, which saw adoption numbers suggesting 38 percent of iPhones were on iOS 5 four full weeks after its release. That was an impressive enough adoption curve, especially compared to the competition, but the key difference between the two – iOS 6 being pushed as an over-the-air update where iOS 5 required plugging in physically to iTunes – seems to be making a big impact on the speed of installation. Onswipe’s numbers agree with Pocket’s released earlier this week, but since Pocket is a native app provider that got a lot of press for providing iOS 6 compatibility, which may have driven increased use by iOS 6 adopting customers, Onswipe’s numbers are probably more representative of the general population.

Apple TV 5.1 Brings Custom Network Configurations, Could Allow For VPN Use

Apple today released its iOS 5.1 update, which brought a number of new features to the table, including the ability to set up custom network configurations using Apple Configurator, the device management tool Apple offers through the Mac App Store for management of multiple iOS devices across an organization or household.

Apple doesn’t go into detail about what exactly you can do with the new network configuration options, saying simply that it allows users to install configuration profiles “to configure Wi-Fi and Ethernet corporate networks,” but it’s very possible that this could also open the door for users to employ virtual private network settings on an Apple TV, meaning that they could potentially get access to U.S. region-locked streaming services like Hulu Plus beyond American shores.

Of course, that’s bad, don’t do that. But if you were so inclined, you could give it a try and let us know what you think. I’m hearing that getting Configurator to properly prepare Apple TV units for device management isn’t working just yet, but this could be because an update from Apple for that piece of software is still required and will be fixed soon. Apple's latest iPhone and iPad OS offers a new Maps experience and small, iterative improvements elsewhere in the OS.

A review of iOS 6 is not a review of revolution, but of refinement. iOS has been the gold standard for smartphones and tablets since the day it was first introduced, and Apple's resisted the urge to make any radical changes, instead slowly polishing it with each successive version. That means iOS 6 is recognizably the same basic operating system that shipped on the original iPhone in 2007, while its biggest competitor, Android, looks completely different from what Google started with in 2008.
That rigorous consistency has led some to feel that iOS has become a little too familiar, but through the years the iterative updates on top of a rock-solid base have led to a platform that's second to none as a balance of features, usability, and capability.
iOS updates in the past have almost always come with headline new features, but iOS 6 is a bit of an exception: Apple says that it has added over 200 new features to iOS 6, but only the new mapping system comes close to altering the experience in the same way that apps, multitasking, or Siri did. Millions of iPhone customers may soon find themselves losing touch with an old friend: Google Maps.

On Wednesday , Apple released a software update for the iPhone that, among other changes, replaces theGoogle maps that have been on the phone since 2007 with Apple's own maps. The early feedback from reviewers and early adopters of the new software is that it is attractive but suffers from holes and glitches.

iOS 6 update rolling out now for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch

The iPhone 5 may not be released until September 21st, but we've confirmed that Apple has just begun rolling out updates to iOS 6 for current-generation devices. Users of the iPhone 4S, 4, 3GS, iPad 2, new iPad, and iPod touch should all begin seeing updates, although it's unlikely to be live for everyone yet. Last week, Apple released iTunes 10.7, a relatively minor update that adds support for both iOS 6 and the latest generation of iPod nano and shuffle. Unlike previous major updates, though, Apple is delivering iOS 6 over the air as well as through iTunes.

iOS 6 Release Date

The iOS 6 release date is likely to arrive on September 18th or September 19th.

once the software has been released by Apple there is no guarantee all users will be able to download it straight away. As there will be such a high demand for the upgrade it may be difficult at first to download iOS 6, which will depend on the time of day you attempt updating the software.

Despite the wealth and size of Apple servers can only handle a certain amount of traffic at once. As it has been suggested before the iPhone 5 is thought to be made available by September 21st, and these devices will obviously come with iOS 6 already installed.

Apple to introduce new iPod nano and iPod touch

A new report at 9to5Mac claims Apple will use the tomorrow media event to introduce new models of the iPod touch, iPod nano and iPod shuffle.

The rumor suggests the iPod shuffle will be made available in more color options this fall, but that’s pretty much it. The iPod nano update will center around memory, being made available in just one option, as opposed to the current 8GB and 16GB models.

The iPod touch will receive the most significant update, with rumors suggesting it will receive a 4″ screen like what we expect to see from the iPhone 5. In addition, the new iPod Touch could gain the iPhone’s A5 chip for greater speed and a better graphics capability. 9to5Mac indicates pricing is likely to be similar to the current iPod touch.

Samsung has Sold 20 Million Galaxy S III’s in Three Months But Successful run may be Soon Nearing to end

  Samsung has had a bad few weeks in court, but it seems like it’s been winning hard in the marketplace over the past few months. The South Korean manufacturer earlier reported that it shipped 10 million units of the Galaxy S3 in the first month since its release, and it has since followed it up by disclosing that it has doubled that figure in the succeeding two months.

In the three months from its late May release, this adds up to 20 million Galaxy S3s sold.

In comparison, the manufacturer’s previous flagship, the Galaxy S2, took 10 months to reach that figure. Supposedly, European customers were the biggest buyers of the Galaxy S3 at 6 million, with the US sitting second at 4 million and South Koreans snapping up 2.5 million units. Supposedly, Galaxy S3 sales in the US were high enough to make the smartphone the best-selling handset in three of the four major carriers in the country.

However, Samsung’s successful run may be soon nearing its end. Apple has already sent out invitations for a September 12 event, which it heavily hinted could be the formal unveiling of the iPhone 5.

Analysts suggest that the lower performance of the iPhone 4S in the marketplace could be mainly due to the Apple faithful waiting it out for the next-generation iPhone to arrive. This sort of pent-up demand has led to expectations of a massive blowout for the new smartphone: 10 million units sold within the first week, leading up to a phenomenal 200 million sales until the end of the year.

We would try here to compare two smartphone heroes of our time but we should caution our readers to read the iPhone 5 features with a pinch of salt.

Display

Rumors are rife that iPhone 5 will sport a 4-inch Display, Teardrop Design and Rubberized Bezel Body and the "resolutionary" Retina display with 1280 x 720 resolutions (367ppi). Moreover, various rumors suggest, iPhone 5 might sport a Quantum Dot LED curved glass edge-to-edge display

Galaxy S3, on the other hand, sports a 4.8-inch Super AMOLED HD panel with 1280×720-pixel resolution and more than 319 ppi.

When compared with iPhone 4s, The HD Super AMOLED display of Galaxy S3 gives richer color contrast and feels less cramped than iPhone (although 4S gives brighter and razor-sharp display) and even if the next generation iPhone sports a bigger display, Samsung is still a winner in this field.

Processor

Samsung Galaxy S3 has packed in a dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor that clocks at 1.4 GHz for the US version and it is currently the nation's fastest phone. The Japanese version of the phone is expected to come with 2GB RAM while other global versions will have 1GB RAM. Meanwhile, rumor is rife that Apple will pack in a faster A5X chip and quad-core graphics processor in the new iPhone. It's difficult to say which phone works better as internals of both the phones impress.

Operating System

Apple has already launched iOS 6 at this year's WWDC and it will feature in the iPhone 5. While the last iOS 5.1 was nothing but a mere upgrade of the iOS 5, the new iOS 6 introduced some welcome features such as Shared Photo Streams toggle, Reading List syncing over 3G, new Twitter icon, new TweetSheet in Siri UI, Guided Access mode, Calendar item ending times in Notification Center along with other.

For Galaxy S3, Samsung was predictable while providing Android Ice Cream Sandwich OS.  With the expected launch of next version of Android OS, Jelly Bean, Samsung users can expect to receive the upgrade on their Galaxy S3.  

Camera

Apple lovers can expect a revolutionary camera with its iPhone 5 as Patently Apple earlier reported that, "Apple has invented a killer 3D imaging camera that will apply to both still photography and video. The new cameras in development will utilize new depth-detection sensors such as LIDAR, RADAR and Laser that will create stereo disparity maps in creating 3D imagery. Additionally, the cameras will use advanced chrominance and luminance Sensors for superior color accuracy."

Meanwhile, Samsung has provided an 8 MP primary snapper with the phone and the camera features high dynamic range, non-existent shutter lag, panoramic shooting, burst shot, two sharing modes and Best Shot option. While we still do not know what to expect in the iPhone 5 camera, we can surely tag the Galaxy S3 camera as one of the best in the market along with the HTC One X camera.

Battery

As iPhone 5 will sport a HD enabled display and some powerful apps, it is highly probable that the Cupertino giant will pack in a better battery than the current iPhone 4S Li-Po 1420 mAh.

Galaxy S3, on the other hand, comes with a 2100 mAh battery, a much better battery than its predecessor's Li-Ion 1650 mAh battery.  The phone gives almost 1350 minutes of talk time in 2G and up to 700 minutes in 3G.

Memory

Samsung phone comes with 16/32/64 GB storage options and storage can be expanded up to 64 GB through External Memory card.

Apple will also have the similar storage option but there's very less chance of seeing an expandable memory card option.

Price

In the U.S., Galaxy S3 comes with a price tag of $199.99 for the 16GB and $249.99 for the 32GB model (on two-year contract but price differs from carrier to carrier). The new iPhone, if anything, will not be cheaper than its predecessor which is now priced at $199.99 (16GB), $299.99 (32GB) and $399.99 (64GB).

Human Interaction features of Galaxy S3

The new Human Interaction features of Galaxy S includes S Voice (a customized voice recognition system that recognizes a variety of commands like turning on snooze mode, launching the camera application, play and control music, control volume, compose text and email and more), Smart Stay (using the front-facing camera, the phone monitors your eyes and maintain a "bright display for continued viewing pleasure"), S Beam (an enhanced version of Android Beam system that will allow content to be shared easily, and works with NFC and Wi-Fi Direct), Pop Up play (to let user watch a video while using other apps like browsing web), Direct Call (it will allow users to make a call to the person they are texting simply by lifting the phone to their ear), Smart Alert (this feature will inform you of missed calls, messages, or emails by vibrating gently when you pick up the after keeping it idle for some time), Social Tag (it recognize faces in photos and links with social media information directly from the gallery), AllShare Media and more. 

But, a few features (read S Voice, AllShare Media) share striking resemblance with Apple's few apps and might not sway Apple fans.

The Samsung phone also sports a revolutionary wireless charging used with a special charger.

Some features expected to be seen in iPhone 5 are Siri 2.0, Face Unlock, Universal Remote Control, New Dock Connector and Crack-Resistant Glass.

Verdict: Buying a smartphone depends solely on the preference and personal choice of the user. But Samsung has done a splendid job with the Galaxy S3 smartphone. And Apple has quite a tough battle to win against the Galaxy S3.

Apple may be launching a new edition of theiPhone 4S and doing away with the iPhone 3GSwhen it launches the next generation iPhone. According to a news report in The Telegraph, quoting sources close to retailers, the Cupertino-based tech giant will add an 8GB version of the current flagship, iPhone 4S, to its line-up.

The news story adds that the purported iPhone 5, which is expected to be unveiled on September 12, will come in three storage capacities. If this is true, it is likely that Applewill stick to the 16, 32 and 64GB formula for the new phone as well. Along with that, the sources also said that the sixth-generation iPhone will hit the shelves on September 21, in line with rumours.

If the company discontinues the Apple iPhone 3GS in India as well, it will peg the price of the base variant of the iconic device at Rs 37,000, a far cry from the Rs 10,000 price tag of the 3GS version. This will further alienate the manufacturer from the country's buyers; the company is not among the top 10 mobile phone makers of India. It is expected that the iPhone 4S 8GB, if launched, will cost approximately Rs 40,000.

Apple iPhone ‘crushes‘ 8 contested Samsung phones

Apple's iPhone has already crushed eight Samsung smartphones that it wants to be banned in the US markets, a study has revealed.

Advertising analytics firm Chitika measured a week's worth of US mobile web traffic generated by the iPhone versus the eight contested Samsung phones.

The study showed that iPhones drove eight times the mobile web usage of all eight Samsung models combined.

In other words, iPhones accounted for 88 percent of all web traffic analyzed, versus 11 percent generated in total by all the Samsung phones, Wired.com reports.

According to the report, the study analysed phone usage rather than sales.

Apple is seeking to ban Samsung's Galaxy S 4G, Galaxy S2 AT&T, Galaxy S2, Galaxy S2 T-Mobile, Galaxy S2 Epic 4G, Galaxy S Showcase, Droid Charge and Galaxy Prevail.

Apple submitted the list in a US court a few days after a jury found Samsung copied the iPhone and iPad in creating and marketing its own products.

Apple's request for an injunction against the eight Samsung phones, as well as Samsung's attempts to have the jury's original verdict set aside, will be heard at a hearing on December 6.

Apple iPhone 5: Pay by ‘waving your handset‘

Apple iPhone, which has already replaced digital cameras, MP3 players and portable game consoles for most owners, could be about to replace your wallet.

The next iPhone, which is believed to launch in just two weeks time, is expected to come with a built-in chip which can serve as your credit or debit card for small payments.

Tech savvies looking at leaked images of the internals of the device have spotted what they believe is an NFC chip within the phone.

NFC is seen as the successor to the chip-and-pin, serving as a small contactless card that can be waved against scanners at tills to automate a payment, the Daily Mail reported.

Some debit cards already have this feature installed, and certain retailers such as Pret a Manger already use this technology.

Other phones have come with in-built NFC, with Google making a big play for the market with its 'Wallet' accounts in the United States.

According to 9to5Mac, which has credible sources within Apple, "Apple could tie in with a payment processor like Citibank's PayPass system for credit card transactions - or it could become a payment processor of sorts with its hundreds of millions of credit cards already on file at iTunes."

Apple iPhone 5: Sharp behind schedule in making display

Production of Sharp's screens for Apple's latest iPhone is behind schedule as the Japanese display maker struggles with low production yields, a source close to the matter told Reuters on Friday.

Apple, which is also tapping other suppliers such as Japan Display and South Korea's LG Display for the new, thinner displays, is planning a major launch on September 12. That has raised expectations that the product will be its latest iPhone model.

Sharp President Takashi Okuda said on August 2 that his company would begin mass production and shipments from its Kameyama LCD plant in central Japan this month. The facility is widely known to make screens for Apple, but Sharp has declined to acknowledge thatApple is a customer.

Kameyama "is operational," Sharp spokeswoman Miyuki Nakayama said, declining to give details of either output or shipment levels.
