All the Gadgets go to slimmer, sexier in 2013

iPhone 5, iPad Mini, Nexus 7 and Galaxy SIII rocked the devices market in 2012, but as gadgets get slimmer, sexier and more powerful, similar to those seen in 007 Bond flicks, gadget enthusiasts are in for a treat in 2013.

2012 saw users transitioning from feature phones to smartphones as they moved from just talking and texting to tweeting, networking socially and shopping with increasing mobileinternet penetration and lower data tariffs.

From a little over 100 million Internet users in 2011, the number has now grown to close to 140 million with more people, especially youth, going online using their mobile phones.

"The handset market remained dynamic in 2012 with a clear preference emerging for smarter performing devices among consumers. The trend was not limited to the high end only but even entry level users moving up aspired it all," Nokia Senior Vice President (Sales - IMEA) D Shivakumar said.

In 2013, Nokia expects to see a massification of these two trends with lower price points for devices and a plethora of relevant services and content being available, he added.

Smartphone lineup for gadget freaks includes Apple iPhone 5S,Samsung Galaxy S4 and Nokia Lumia 920 and 820.

According to a McKinsey & Company report, internet-linked consumption and expenditure in India contributes an estimated $30 billion, or about 1.6 per cent of the GDP and is poised to account for 2.8 to 3.3 per cent by 2015.

The same report says India is likely to also have the second-largest internet user base in the world with 330 million to 370 million Internet users in 2015.

This year, while mobile browsers were a default installation on the handsets, companies like Nokia focussed on offering devices with a dedicated Facebook button.

Operators also introduced special tariff plans to allow consumers surf the net and visit social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter.

Another highlight of the year was the flooding of Indian market with low-cost tablet PCs, with the likes of Micromax, HCL and Zen launching their devices to cater to the burgeoning demand from rural parts of the country as well as increasing interest from enterprises.

Traditionally dominated by global giants like Apple and Samsung, the tablet PC price war is now being fought at the bottom of the pyramid with many lesser known companies introducing devices for segments like education and enterprises.

"We are finding it easier to sell high end phones compared to economy range phone. On an average, we have been able to sell an average of 25,000 unit of our Intel chip-based Xolo phones which are in the price range of Rs 10,000 to Rs 15,000," Lava International's founder member and Director S N Rai said.

google nexus 10 review

Google Nexus 10 by Samsung
GOOGLE NEXUS 10 BY SAMSUNG
briefmobile release the first picture of nexus 10.here is the first look at Google’s Nexus 10 tablet
by Samsung. The device, manufactured by the popular Korean OEM, features the latest version of Google’s Android operating system— Android 4.2 Jelly Bean. Yes, it’s still called “Jelly Bean.” There’s no “Key Lime Pie” yet.

NEXUS 10 – HARDWARE

Nexus 10 Specifications

  • Samsung Exynos 5250
    • Clocked at 1.7 GHz
    • Dual-core Cortex-A15
    • Mali-T604 GPU
  • 2GB RAM
  • 16GB internal storage (other options possible)
  • 10.1-inch Super AMOLED display
    • 2560 x 1600 pixel resolution
    • 298.9 pixels-per-inch
  • 5-megapixel rear-facing camera
    • LED flash
  • Front-facing camera
  • NFC
  • WiFi
  • Bluetooth 4.0
  • Dual speakers located on front of device
Inside, the Nexus 10 features a Samsung-built Exynos 5250 processor with a Cortex-A15 architecture and Mali-T604 GPU. That’s the same processor used in Google’s latest Chromebook. It’s a 1.7 GHz clocked dual-core powerhouse that benchmarks better than the Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro and Apple A6 SoCs. Like the new Android elite, the Nexus 10 houses a full 2GB of RAM, which gives it that speedy edge in multi-tasking.
We’re not sure if there will be multiple storage sizes/options available at launch. The unit used by our trusted source had 16GB of internal memory. There is no microSD card slot. Google is relying heavily on their new Drive and Play Store infrastructures for cloud storage, whether Android fans like it or not. We were thinking Drive might come pre-installed on this device, but that’s not the case (at the moment).
The display is an incredible feat for Samsung. At 2560 x 1600 pixels, it far surpasses the Apple iPad’s “Retina Display” in resolution. We’re told the display measures 10.1-inches. That means we’re looking at approximately 298.9 pixels-per-inch, dwarfing Apple’s 263.92 on the third-generation iPad.
Google’s Nexus 10 will launch with a 5-megapixel rear camera, NFC connectivity, WiFi, and Bluetooth 4.0.
Update: The device’s back feels like brushed aluminum, says our source. There are rubber coated edges, and it’s extremely light and thin.
ANDROID 4.2 – SOFTWARE

Build Details

We all know the Nexus 10 will be running an unadulterated version of the Android operating system. We can now confidently say that it’ll launch with Android 4.2 Jelly Bean. An upgrade from Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean was pushed to test devices on October 24th. For those of you who care, we’re looking at Android API Level 17. The build the Nexus 10 runs as of this moment is titled “JVP15I.” The device’s fingerprint: “google/mantaray/manta:4.2/JVP15I/508255:user/release-keys.”
New Applications

Like AndroidPolice leaked this past week, there is a brand new Gallery application. As of now, the Gallery icon remains unchanged from Android 4.1.
Android 4.2 - Gallery
ANDROID 4.2 – GALLERY
The camera application has been significantly improved. A new slide-to-activate menu can be triggered by a button in the upper right corner. The menu, seen below, appears.
In addition, the camera and clock application icons have been remodeled slightly by the designers at Google.

User Accounts

Multiple user accounts appear to be enabled on this build of Android 4.2. The earlier referenced set of leaks indicated that this feature may finally surface in 4.2, and it seems like the screenshot below makes it official.
Quick Settings

Also, we can see the new quick-settings bar below, which was originally pointed out by AndroidPolice in the system dump leak. Users will have access to quick toggles for user accounts, brightness levels, WiFi, auto rotation, airplane mode, Bluetooth, and battery status. We can speculate about whether or not these toggles can be added to or subtracted from. It does appear that user accounts will be allowed to have their own profile pictures.

Microsoft Surface priced below Apple‘s new iPad

Image
Microsoft is setting the price of its new Surface tablet below comparable versions of Apple iPad, signaling its intent to grab a slice of the booming tablet market.

The world's largest software company, which announced its surprise foray into computer manufacturing in June, said it would sell a 32-gigabyte (GB), Wi-Fi only version of its tablet at $499, versus $599 for a comparable version of Apple's new iPad.

Microsoft's tablet, which is taller and slightly heavier than an iPad, will go on sale on October 26 as the company launches the new touch-friendly Windows 8 operating system. A limited number will be available for pre-order from a Microsoft website from Tuesday morning.

The company is hoping the Surface - along with Windows tablets from other hardware makers - will challenge the dominance of Apple's iPad, which has 70 percent of the tablet market after essentially inventing the category in 2010.

Soon, store 10 terabits on a fingernail-sized device

A new discovery may open the way for the development of next generationdata storage devices with capacities of up to 10terabits (10 trillion bits) per square inch - vastly enhancing storage on much smaller data devices.

Imagine storing thousands of songs and high-resolution images on data devices no bigger than a fingernail.

An ultra-smooth surface may be the answer, according to a discovery by the researchers from Agency for Science, Technology and Research's (ASTAR) Institute of Materials Research and Engineering (IMRE) and the National University of Singapore (NUS), reports the journal Nature reports.

The self-assembly technique is one of the simplest and cheapest high-volume methods for creating uniform, densely-packed nanostructures that could potentially help store data, according to an ASTAR statement.

Best laptops around 35K,which one you select?

The HP Pavilion G6-2101TU fits the bill. During our use, we found it to be pretty fast in launching programs, packing and unpacking Zip files, and multi-tasking. At the moment, it is one of the few mainstream laptops in this price range to be powered by the new 3rd-generationIntel Core i processors. It has average battery life, lasting almost four hours of continuous FullHD video playback.

What we like: The 3rd gen Core i3 processor is great for an all-purpose machine. It can even run demanding 3D games like Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 at low graphics settings. Plus, there is ample storage on offer and lots of connectivity options. Sound output from in-built Altec Lansing speakers is loud and clear. The screen is bright and renders colours well. Of course, like most other laptops, the viewing angles are bad.

What we don't like: In its default configuration, the laptop comes with just 2GB RAM. But users can add upgrade to 4GB for another 1,000. While 2GB RAM is sufficient at the moment for normal use, we would recommend the upgrade to futureproof your purchase.

The keys are too small for such a big laptop. They also feel as if they are made from cheap plastic, making typing an unpleasant experience. While the trackpad is responsive, the left- and right-click buttons are too stiff.

The company is targeting 8 percent market share and plans to invest Rs 100 crore in the segment over the next three years.

The company has set up a one-lakh-square-feet manufacturing facility spread over five acres, with a production capacity of 2,000 LED TV units per day at Rudrapur, Uttrakhand.

‘Ultrabooks a major flop in markets‘

Ultrabooks -- those sleek, lightweight laptop computers that were supposed to fire up PC sales -- are not catching on with consumers, a new survey shows.

The research firm IHS iSuppli on Monday slashed its forecast in half for the ultrabooks, saying high prices and ineffective marketing have culminated in a failure to lure buyers away from other hot-selling mobile gadgets.

The survey showed 10.3 million ultrabooks will ship worldwide in 2012, down from the previous forecast issued earlier this year of 22 million units. More than half of the shipments for the year are expected in the fourth quarter.
