Microsoft’s Windows Store reaches 50,000 apps milestone

Microsoft
Microsoft has finally has over 50,000 apps in its Windows Store. According to MetroStore Scanner, there are currently 50,304 apps available from the Windows Store as of today. There have been an average of about 279 apps developed daily in March alone. March is the first month in a long time in which Microsoft saw an increase in app development. Since November, app development had been on a rapid decline.
App development for Windows 8 hit its peak in November, with an average of 468 new apps being developed daily. The number dropped down to 412 apps developed daily in December, plummeted to 174 apps in January, and fell even further to 142 apps in February. The new surge in app development is possibly due to Microsoft’s new cash incentive for developers to create apps for its ecosystem.
Microsoft is offering developers $100 per app they develop for Windows 8 or Windows Phone 8. They are allowed to develop up to 10 apps per OS for a grand total of $2000. The contest began on March 8th, and is set to end on June 30th. There will only be 10,000 apps accepted. While $100 per app may not be too enticing to developers, Microsoft is also offering developers a 80% split for revenue generated by their apps. That’s 10% more than what Apple and Android offers.
The statistics account for apps for both Windows 8 PCs as well as Windows RT tablets. So saying that Windows 8 has surpassed the Mac’s available 14,000 apps would be a lie. If you take into account the 370,000+ apps the iPad currently has, the Windows Store is still miles behind in development. Nonetheless, 50,000 apps in 4 months is an impressive milestone, and as more people adapt to Windows 8 and Windows tablets, we should see some great advancements for the OS in the future.

Windows 8 needs improvement: Microsoft co-founder

Describing elements of  Windows 8 as 'puzzling',  Microsoft co-founder Paul Allenhas admitted that the upcoming operating system needs some improvement.

Allen said some elements of the operating system 'can induce confusion', but added that he was 'excited and impressed' by the new programme overall.

"Windows 8 does certainly require a brief adjustment period before users become familiar and comfortable with the new 'bimodal' operating system," the Telegraph quoted Allen, as saying.

Allen said he had been using Windows 8 on both a desktop computer and on a tablet, but described the dual operating system as confusing and said it was difficult to know which mode to choose when opening an application or a file.

"A few minor issues aside, I'm impressed with its clever integration of a bimodal interface to simultaneously support both desktop and tablet use in the same operating system," he added. (ANI)

Nokia Lumia 920 price higher than Samsung Galaxy S III

Struggling Finnish cellphone maker Nokia has priced its new flagship model Lumia 920 more than 10 per cent higher than key rival Samsung Electronics' Galaxy S III, pricing data from Sweden and Italy showed on Thursday.
Analysts said Nokia will struggle to explain the premium of the Lumia 920, which uses Microsoft's Windows Phone 8 software and is seen as potentially its last chance to break into the profitable segment and secure its future.
"Hardware-wise they are pretty similar, it would be hard for Nokia to justify that extra cost to consumers," said Ovum analyst Nick Dillon. "Windows Phone is still largely an unknown to consumers - they would probably expect to pay less if they are taking a risk."

Windows 8 will be formally launched in October

Microsoft is taking a big gamble over the next few months with Windows and Office, the two products responsible for most of its revenue and profit, according to Gartner. It is a risk that Microsoft must take to stay relevant in a world where mobile devices with new modern experiences are becoming the norm.

"When the PC dominated personal computing by providing a single device for messaging, internet access, gaming and productivity, Windows was a powerhouse for Microsoft," said Michael Silver, vice president and analyst at Gartner. "However, smartphones and tablets, led by the iPhone and iPad, have changed the way people work, making the PC just one of several devices people use. The PC is increasingly simply a peer with other devices."

New Lumia phones: Last chance for Nokia?

"The N95 was the last great phone Nokiamade," says Dhruv Bhutani, a technology blogger and a Nokia enthusiast, as he recalls the Finnish company's glory days.

Since he fell in love with N95 in 2007, Bhutani never used a non-Nokia device as his primary phone. That was until 2011, when he decided to give iPhone 4S a chance. He used it for several months and realized it was difficult to part ways with the Apple's phone.

"Nokia made many smartphones after N95. Some good, some average and some marred by glitches. None of them came close to N95 in terms of polish, hardware and user experience," says Bhutani. "But there is one phone that is as great as N95. The one made by Apple. I find iPhone 4S a complete package, the way great Nokia phones used to be."

Nokia Lumia 1001 Windows Phone 8 Concept by Jonas Daehnert

We have seen some lovely Nokia concept phones before, created by the sameJonas Daehnert and now here’s a fresh one. The Nokia Lumia 1001 is even more beautiful than the freshly launched Lumia 920 and 820 and it brings an air of elegance and finesse to the series. The new Lumias are bulky, massive and heavy, but this one seems slimmer.

I particularly like the lower side of the handset, that somehow seems a bit Apple-inspired to me, if I think about the iPhone 5 renders I’ve seen lately, which is a good thing. Under the display that I dare to speculate is a 4.5 inch HD unit, we find 3 capacitive buttons and on the side we find the buttons with a changed look. Gone are those faux metal buttons and here are some faux rubber ones, if I may say so. I can’t seem to spot a camera button, while at the top there’s a mystery tray, that’s actually prety big, big enough to host both the SIM and microSD together.
